Alex Katz - Flowers
Flowers brings together a luminous series of works by American artist Alex Katz, one of the most influential painters of his generation. Flowers first appeared as a quiet backdrop in his group portraits, their presence adding rhythm and colour. Katz later turned his gaze fully towards them, working outdoors to capture the light, immediacy and atmosphere of nature in bloom.
This beautifully produced volume accompanies the first exhibition of Katz’s flower paintings in Asia, held at Thaddaeus Ropac, Seoul. It presents previously unseen works from his ongoing flower series, alongside new portraits set within botanical surroundings. His signature style - crisp planes of flat colour, elegant strokes, and clarity of form - is expanded here through a subtler wet-on-wet technique, where layers are applied before the previous has dried, creating energy and immediacy within each canvas.
