George Sowden is a founding member of the Memphis Group, the bold Italian design movement that reimagined everyday objects with colour, wit and architectural form. His work blends industrial thinking with characterful touches — creating designs that feel at once technical and human. The Sowden Lamp carries this spirit, offering quiet innovation wrapped in something you’ll want to live with.
The Sowden Portable Lamp is a dual-power LED table light designed to move with you. At home, it connects directly to a power supply via USB. Unplug the cable and the lamp automatically switches to its own rechargeable batteries, making it perfect for spaces without access to electricity.
Each lamp comes with two Sowden Li-ion 18650 batteries (2600 mAh, 3.7 V). When the lamp is turned off, the batteries recharge via USB in approximately four hours. A red indicator light confirms charging is in progress and turns off when fully charged. A fully charged lamp provides between 9 and 36 hours of light, depending on the brightness setting.
The light source is the Sowden LED Disc 01, delivering 3.5 watts of power and up to 300 lumens of brightness. The LED disc is replaceable, as are the batteries, which can be swapped out with fully charged ones — a practical feature for restaurants, events or any setting needing long hours of portable light.
This lamp has a chromed aluminium and ABS body with a refined aluminium shade. It measures 160 mm in diameter and 260 mm in height, making it compact enough for desks, bedsides and small dining settings. It is suitable for use indoors or outdoors in dry conditions.
